Ziggurat Steps

Ziggurat Steps

Steps 1–5 for the classic Ziggurat sweater

The Ziggurat Steps are much the same in all Ziggurat patterns.
You will recognise the steps and moves from one pattern to the next.

  • knit a tailored yoke with contiguous sleeve caps
  • do not cut the yarn
  • no pieces to join

Getting your yarn from one place to another in order to continue building your yoke involves some unusual zigging and zagging.
Basically: you use the sleeve caps to get your yarn to where it is needed next.

Step 1: white · Step 2: chartreuse ·Step 3: orange · Step 4: maroon · Step 5: red

Step 1. Cast on & Right Back Shoulder.

Step 2. Left Back Shoulder.

Step 3. Work back and forth across the back (to build back half of the sleeve caps)
Final row (WS): pick up & purl stitches for first half of Left Cap (A).
note: pick up & purl from Right Side (see page from the First Ziggurat Book, below).
Make a LOOP in your circular before picking up stitches in Step 4.

Step 4. Left Front Shoulder

  • pick up & purl sts in cast on for Left Back Shoulder (again: pickup from RS) – it is important to pay attention to the SECOND stitch. It needs to align with the slipped-stitch column on the back shoulder.
This alignment is what creates the uninterrupted faux seam across the cap and which continues down the entire armhole.

cardigans: set up buttonband as an extension of the pickup (see Buttonband Tutorial)

Congratulations! You are done with the trickiest part.

  • knit left front
  • final row (RS):
    • pick up & knit stitches for front half of Left Cap (B)
    • knit across the back
    • pick & knit stitches for back half of Right Cap (C)

cardigans: work an intermediate step ( Step 4a) to get your buttonband around the back neck so you can knit it along with Right Front)

Step 5. Right Front Shoulder

  • pick up & knit stitches in Right Back Shoulder cast on (pay attention to the SECOND stitch also here)
  • knit Right Front
  • Final Row (WS):
    • pick up & purl stitches (from RS) for front half of Right Cap
    • purl across all stitches around the back to Left Front neck.

You are done with the tricksy bits!
All stitches sit happily together on your circular.

From here you shape neckline and build sleeve caps (Step 6).
At some point before the underarm cast on you will cast on front stitches to continue in the round.

Shaping and increases from this point are probably similar to many other top-down methods.
