tric
Tric is an A-line shaped cardigan with strong and simple lines, knitted in one piece from the centre back collar down to the hem, collar, front bands and all.
The top has a tailored fit with (top-down-in-the-round) set-in sleeves, while the body is flatteringly flared by a rib triangle in back.
The technique used is Åsa’s Top-Down Ziggurat Tricnique.
Step-by-step instructions and a photo tutorial guide you through the unusual beginning, which involves a bit of zigging, zagging, and zipping back and forth before you’re off and sooner at the hem than you’d thought.
Sizes available

A note on yardage
To make best use of your skeins, work the sleeves before joining the third skein for the body. Then you can knit the body as long as you wish or as far as your yarn takes you.
For example, the sample size 40 used up exactly 5 skeins of (tosh merino DK) in this way. The pattern lists 6 skeins for that size to be on the safe side, but you could do it with five.
Approximate yarn requirements based on the sample in size 40:
790 (820, 880, 920, 1030) 1100, 1160, 1190, 1320, 1350
But please go by the recommended number of skeins. The lower and approximate yardages are listed only to help you get an idea of whether you could get away with less than the recommended number of skeins – and only if you are willing to finish the sleeves before the body and/or adjust the length of sleeves and/or body as you go.

I just downloaded the pattern for Tric. Imagine my surprise when I found it isn’t in English. The website is, so how can I get the pattern in English? Mary Lundberg
It is indeed in English (as well as in German since a few months). You may have to scroll to see it? I’m not sure how you are accessing it, but let me know if you still have trouble finding it!
Hello Ása and congratulations on your wonderful designs. I am a designer myself and have been publishing some patterns. Sometimes I like knitting from other designers and this time I chose your beautiful Tric sweater. It is so good to put oneself into the mindset of other designers. But now I have started the sweater 10 times and I always end up in trouble on row 2 – I am knitting size 102 and I always end up with too many stitches if I follow the diagram?? Is it me missing something or what? I also have a question about turning – should one only turn the work when said in the pattern? I appreciate your help on this – Kindly Helga
Hello Helga!
Yes, it’s useful to try different approaches and different ways of thinking, isn’t it. Now… for assitance, I would suggest you visit the Tric discussion in my Ravelry Group – there you’ll get both better and speedier help than anywhere else. As for turning: You turn on unfinished rows only when told so. You turn also as usual at end of rows (including rows that end before a LOOPED cable).
Hello Ása and than you for your reply – I figured the first steps out and everything seems to be correct. Now I am in Step 3 and I am totally at loss in the first 4 rows – picking up with the left part of the collar. In the setup row I have the correct number of stitches (12) for the size I am knitting. But then on row 1 (RS) I have to (p1, yo) 8 times rather than 6 as described for my size – that is so I will end up with 1 stitch to purl at the end. In Row 2 I also have to (p3tog, k1) 4 times but not 3 in order to end up with 3 sts. at the end. And in row 3 I am completely lost!! The “german short row” symbols make me very confused and for some reason things never add up. The pattern seems very logical and well written out but I can not make sense of these rows. I can see many people have knitted this sweater and are very happy with the results so I know it can be done!! Sorry for my muddled brain but I would appreciate any help. I have been to the Raverly page and will continue to look there. Kindly Helga
Hello Asa, I found your Tric pattern on Webs (yarn.com). I just love the cardigan pattern. I am would like to know how to determine the amount of yarn needed for the project. I’m thinking about using the Madelinetosh Rios or Madelinetosh Tosh DK for the sweater. I will need a size 36 to fit me. The yardage requirements seem to not be enough to knit the sweater. Is there any updates on the pattern?
I have had no reports on problems with yardage recommendations so far. What makes you think it’s not reliable, please? (Yardage estimates are usually calculated with an approximate margin of 15%).
